Coral reefs are often called the "rainforests of the sea." Though they cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, they support approximately 25% of all marine species. They protect coastlines from storms, provide food for millions of people, and generate billions of dollars in tourism revenue.

Yet coral reefs are dying at an alarming rate. Scientists estimate that we have already lost about half of the worlds coral reefs, and without dramatic action, we could lose 90% by 2050. The disappearance of coral reefs is one of the most urgent environmental crises of our time.

What Are Coral Reefs?

Coral reefs are massive structures built by tiny animals called coral polyps. These polyps secrete calcium carbonate to form hard skeletons, and over thousands of years, these skeletons accumulate to create the vast reef structures we see today.

Coral polyps have a symbiotic relationship with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae, which live inside their tissues. The algae provide the coral with up to 90% of its food through photosynthesis, and the coral provides the algae with shelter and nutrients. This relationship also gives coral its vibrant colors.

Coral Bleaching

The most visible threat to coral reefs is coral bleaching. When ocean temperatures rise even 1-2°C above normal, corals become stressed and expel their symbiotic algae. Without the algae, the coral turns white — hence the term "bleaching."

Coral bleaching is not immediately fatal, but prolonged bleaching leaves corals vulnerable to disease and starvation. If conditions do not improve, the coral dies.

Mass bleaching events have become increasingly frequent and severe. The Great Barrier Reef experienced unprecedented back-to-back bleaching events in 2016 and 2017, losing about 50% of its coral. Bleaching events are now occurring roughly every six years, compared to every 25-30 years historically — not enough time for reefs to recover.
